Two derby events this weekend: bout and recruitment event!

On Saturday, April 13th, the Hellions of Troy’s B-team, the Herculadies, will take on Plattsburgh’s North Country Lumber Jills. Last year the Herculadies faced off against the Lumber Jills in their closest bout of the season, skating away with the win 152 to 126. The Herculadies finished their last season with a 5-1 record and are looking forward to another successful season.

In addition to aggressive, fast-paced all-female roller derby action, fans can look forward to a beer garden at this bout! You read correctly – 21+ fans can now enjoy an ice cold beverage while watching the Herculadies and Lumber Jills go head to head on the track.

The bout will take place at Rollarama Skating Center in Schenectedy, NY on Saturday, April 13th. Doors will open at 7 p.m.; with the first whistle starting the bout at 8 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs as seating is limited.

An after party at Clinton’s Ditch, located 112 South College Street in Schenectedy, will immediately follow the bout. Tickets for the bout are $10 in advance, $12 at the door, and $3 for kids under 12. The Hellions also offer reduced rates for groups over 10.

Open Recruitment!!!  You could play roller derby! Recruitment Event this Sunday night @ 7pm at Rollarama Skating Center.

The Hellions are currently in open recruitment for skaters, referees, and non-skating officials and will be hosting a special recruitment event on Sunday, April 14th from 7-9 p.m. at Rollarama to complete this derby-filled weekend. Women over 18 can join as skaters.

Recruitment Night - plus, check out some practices

We have some recruitment events coming up next week.  As part of Sunday's recruitment night, you can watch us scrimmage the Hudson Valley Horrors.  Got plans for Father's Day already?  Come visit a practice on Monday (7pm) or Thursday (9pm) night.  Each night you'll have a chance to meet the skaters, ask questions, and learn what it takes to be a roller girl.  We're also recruiting referees, officials, and volunteers of both genders.

Recruitment Night: Sunday March 25

Seriously, how fun is this poster?
One of our newest skaters, Anya Tailgate had a great time at our recent photoshoot, and we thought it was the perfect image for what it means to be a Hellion.  We love fun. And we're looking for new members to help our fantastic league grow.

We are recruiting skaters, referees, and volunteers. All skaters are female (but if you're a dude, check out Capital District Mens Roller Derby who we love working with!)... but we welcome both men and women to referee and/or volunteer with us.

Next Recruitment Night: October 9, 2011

I didn't get to really participate in a fresh meat program. Sure, I was considered "fresh meat for the standard three months" but my training was very trial-by-fire.  But I ain't complaining, and it just demonstrates the fact how much our league has grown in the past two years since I joined.

The Hellions have developed a fresh meat training program where we teach new skaters the ropes from the ground up. Based on the WFTDA Minimum Skills Requirements, we teach our new recruits everything about skating roller derby, including:

  • how to fall down safely
  • how to stop
  • how to give a hit
  • how to take a hit
  • perfecting a derby-style stride
Haven't strapped on skates in a couple years?  Maybe more like a decade or two?  No problem.  The ability to skate comes right back to you.

Come check out the Hellions this Sunday night at Rollarama Skating Center (2710 Hamburg Street, Schenectady) at 7pm. Email hellionsrecruitment@gmail.com if you have questions in advance.

One Year Derby Anniversary: Ursula Udders

Guest post by Ursula Udders

How Caitlyn became Ursula Udders
Before roller derby I was Caitlyn - a secretary by day and a theater student by night - besides that I had nothing all that interesting going on: all my friends were at schools in other states, and I wasn’t really great at meeting new people. So I spent most of my time at home or doing things with my mom. On October 2nd, 2009 I was at the mall with my mom because we were bored and shopping was something to do. The first thing we always do is go past the theater to see if anything good is playing, and thats where I saw it: “Whip It” sneak preview one week early... I had heard of it and was really interested in seeing it. At this point I didn’t think roller derby existed anymore, that it was just something people do in TV and movies to make for interesting plots...and boy was I wrong.

Before the movie all these girls with odd names like Scarbucks and Doc Bi O’Hazard came in and sat in the reserved seats. I thought nothing of it and the movie started. By the time the movie was over I was in love and wished roller derby was still around. I’d say about a minute after I thought about that and was out of the theater a girl who had the name Kitty Porn on her back was handing me a flyer about a roller derby recruitment night that Monday for the Hellions of Troy. Needless to say that was all I could talk about for days. I wasn’t sure I would be able to make it that Monday because I had a theater history class, so I went to the website and sent them an E-mail asking another time I could come. Within a few hours I had an e-mail from a girl named Shockratease (an e-mail I still have) saying it was no problem and I could come by on a Thursday.

By the time Monday came around I couldn't wait any long so I set out on going and missing class. When I got there I was greeted by Kitty and Shock. Soon after I was encouraged to put on skates and try it out (Rollarama is an active skating rink, so new recruits can borrow skates until they get their own). The last time I skated was when I was 13 so I knew I wouldn’t be very good at it. I was right - I spent most of the night clinging to the wall with help from a girl named Ivanna. Regardless of my poor skating I wanted to come back and get better. By the third practice I had found my center of balance and got my meat name: Spicy Tuna. I couldn’t of been happier.

On October 5th 2010, it will be one year exactly that I’ve been with the Hellions of Troy... no longer as Spicy Tuna, but as Ursula Udders. I haven’t actually gotten to play in a bout yet since I broke my ankle on January 14th and took almost 4 months to recover, but I haven’t let that scare me away. Yes, that first time back on skates is terrifying thinking about what if it happens again, but you gotta do it and not let anything scare you. It’s also much easier to do with 30+ girls cheering you on. I haven’t passed minimums yet but I’m determined to pass them by my birthday in January.

This has been the best year of my life. I’ve met so many people on my team and on others. I can no longer imagine my life without derby and I wouldn’t give it up for anything.

August Recruitment Night

We had an awesome turnout for our last recruitment night.  About 10 have been coming back consistently, and quite a few already have their gear.  I am impressed!!

If you missed our last recruitment night, you still have another chance this coming Monday, August 16.  Now is definitely the time to join - it's the end of our summer season so you'll have time to learn Derby 101 and prepare at your own pace for joining the veterans on the track.

Also, the Hellions LOVE the fall.  Our birthday is in September (we'll be turning 3!), plus we've got other fun events scheduled such as the Zombie Walk & Zombie Prom.  We'd love to have you join our league!

Be Your Own Hero

Interested in roller derby?  Think you want to skate but not sure you have what it takes?  Come to our recruitment night on Monday, July 26 to see what we're all about!  You'll meet the skaters, talk to league members, and you can even strap on a pair of skates!

We're looking for more than just girls to skate.  Male or female, we always need volunteers, non-skating officials (NSOs), and referees.

I'd been going to roller derby bouts for over a year before I got the courage to show up at a recruitment night.  I'd see ads here and there for it, and thought -- I'll go... next time.  I was scared - what if I didn't fit in?  What if I don't have the time?  I barely knew how to skate!

I've been skating with the Hellions for over 10 months now.  This is one of the funnest things I have ever been involved with in my life.
I totally fit in.  The team is so welcoming.
I made the time.  In fact, roller skating is all I can think about usually!
The team taught me how to skate.  They taught me how to fall down safely.  They taught me how to hit...even though I was shy about it.  Now you better look out because I'm coming for you.

You have what it takes.  Roller derby is amazing and we'd love to have you as part of our league!!
